Summer Is Here! 3 Little Known Day Trips for Edmontonians

[:en]Edmonton, the capital of Alberta. With fertile river valleys, pristine national parks, and enough recreational trails to tire your family dog out every weekend, there’s never a shortage of things to do. Did you know that our city is home to Canada’s largest historical park (spoiler alert!). Lucky for you, there are plenty of options for the adventurous city dweller

Everyone knows the river is great, the CBD is lively, and the Oilers are a treat night in and night out, but what if you want something that isn’t so crowded?

Here are three little known day trips for Edmontonians. From wild animals that make you think you’re in sub-Saharan Africa to giant twisting pathways made of grain stalks, there really are some awesome things to try your hand at.

Fort Edmonton Park

Did you know that Edmonton is home to Canada’s largest historical park (if you read the intro, you did)?

In Fort Edmonton Park, the calendar must have got stuck on 1846, because that’s how people still live their lives. Just south of the centre of the city lies living history at its finest. OK, we admit that isn’t that “little known”, but it isn’t normally on the list of most tourists, so it’s worth a visit or two (or three!).

Elk Island National Park

Just east of the city lies a sanctuary for over 40 species mammals. Bison, elk, moose, and even 250 species of birds call this park home. Only the Serengeti Plains has a higher density of hoofed mammals roaming its turf. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Edmonton Corn Maze

To the west of the city lies the Edmonton Corn Maze. They bill it as “where getting lost means finding fun”. That couldn’t be more accurate. It’s great for families and even fun for couples. The correct pathway through the maze can be traversed in just about 30 minutes, but chances are you won’t be making it through that easily. There are over 85 different decision points, meaning you’ll get a mental workout too.

Edmonton is more than just a business city with a hockey addiction. We’ve got a ton of great stuff for everyone to do both in the city and out. Now that summer is here, these 3 day trips should be put on your 2017 to-do list immediately.
